Budapest Marathon 2026 this autumn: Where to have lunch downtown after the run?

Budapest maraton

In early October, for one weekend, tens of thousands of runners and even more spectators take over downtown Budapest: it’s time for the Budapest Marathon. If you’re going to be in the city on these days — whether as a runner, a spectator, or simply because that’s how your schedule fell — it’s worth thinking ahead about where to have lunch or dinner before or after the big day. We’ll show you what’s worth knowing about the event, and why Beerstro14 is a great choice for marathon weekend.

When and where is the Budapest Marathon in 2026?

The Budapest Marathon Festival will be held on October 10–11, 2026, Saturday and Sunday.

  • Saturday (October 10) is for the shorter distances: the 5 km mini-marathon, the 2.3 km Fun Run, walking and family programs.
  • Sunday (October 11) is for the major distances: the full marathon (42.195 km), the 30 km distance, as well as the half-marathon (21.1 km) and the 14 km distance — the latter two are already full based on registrations. The Sunday start is at 9 a.m.

The start and finish are on the Buda side, on Pázmány Péter Promenade (by ELTE’s Lágymányos Campus), and the route runs along the Danube through some of the capital’s most beautiful areas — passing, among others, Margaret Bridge, Margaret Island, Liberty Bridge and the area around Gellért Hill, right up close to downtown and Fővám Square.

Important: the exact street closures and their timing will be published by the organizers and BKK (Budapest’s public transport authority) closer to the event — if you’re planning to drive downtown that weekend, it’s definitely worth checking beforehand, as you can expect traffic restrictions in several sections and at various times.

Should you have lunch or dinner after the run — which suits you better?

The Sunday start is at 9 a.m., so runners of the shorter distances (5 km, 10 km, 30 km) and early-finishing spectators are likely to be free by early afternoon — perfect timing for a post-run lunch. If you’re running the full marathon or would rather plan your outing for the evening, dinner is the more comfortable choice.

If you’re running yourself, Saturday evening dinner is also a good opportunity to fuel up with a calmer dish rich in complex carbohydrates and protein — a good steak with a side or a hearty stew is just the thing. The next day, on Sunday, after crossing the finish line — whether you stop by for lunch or dinner — a filling but not overly heavy meal and a well-earned drink can do wonders for your mood.

If you’re there as a spectator or simply out of interest, the decision is more a practical one: on marathon day, downtown and the Danube bank are much busier than usual, so for many people it’s simpler to sit down and eat properly a bit further away, in a quieter spot, rather than searching for a free table in the crowd.

Why is Beerstro14 a great choice for marathon days?

Beerstro14 is located on Károlyi utca, in the heart of downtown — within comfortable walking distance of both the marathon route and the Fővám Square area, yet calm enough that you can sit and chat over a good meal regardless of the hustle and bustle of the race.

This comes in especially handy on marathon weekend: you don’t have to go far to step out of the crowd, and it’s also easily reachable on foot if you’d rather not deal with a car because of the closures. Our menu features dry-aged steaks, a selection of craft beers and wines — a perfect choice whether for a carb-loading dinner on Saturday evening, or a post-run lunch or celebratory dinner on Sunday.

Is it worth booking a table in advance?

Yes, absolutely. On marathon weekend, downtown is considerably busier than usual, and many people look for exactly this kind of calmer spot to eat at — so it’s worth booking your table early, especially for Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon-to-evening. Here’s how to book:

  • 1–10 people: through our online reservation system
  • 10–15 people: by phone or email
  • 15+ people: by email only
